Hello folks,

So far I just want to preface that this game looks amazing for this early access release. Everything looks smooth from the wind blowing the trees and from the lights reflections on the water's surface. However there are a few things that I have noticed, personally, that would be some great QOL improvements to the players experience, as well as some things I have personally noticed in the game that could do with some tweaking.

One major thing that I feel should get some attention is the sounds of movement from the Player Character. I have my stats set to Ultra Quality, but while I am walking I can barely hear the footfall during movement. With it being such a snowy/icy environment I would kind of expect more crunching or sloshing sounds from the movement... I can barely hear them at all to be honest and that is my system at max volume. The same can be said about the sounds while sprinting. To my ears all it really sounds like is the same sound of the walk only slightly louder, but not even by that much. Also, regarding the Character, there are some (albeit personal) issues with the voice acting, it's not that it is bad, but there are just some things that he says during game play that just sound flat a bit, be in interaction with objects or the world as a whole. Like I said, overall it's good, but there is just a personal issues that some things sounds so "I guess" about things I hope that this can be addressed as time goes on into it's development.

Another aspect of the game that I feel could be addressed is the collision of the Player with certain objects in the game world. The biggest item in question that I have seen is from the sticks laying on the ground. One should easily be able to just walk over them but from what I have experienced it blocks your path if you try to walk over, and there is some small boundary surrounding them as well. Another aspect I have seemed to notice is when you are walking down a steep surface (From the mountainous areas mainly) is that you seem to hover over parts of the surface and that seems to extend a large bit past said surface and you don't fall.

Moving on to object interactions. Coming from most games, any object in the world that is interact-able, you are able to do so using any portion of that said object which is sadly not the case with this game. There is a specific point or points on the object only that make it so. If I were in my standard style of "Loot n' Scoot" that makes this task seemingly impossible to just run and grab what I need and get out in a hurry, or if I am trying to get away from a dangerous situation i.e. Blizzards or Angry Critters, so it's something that I feel could be worked on in the future.

The UI, looking at it it feels good. I enjoy those little quirks that it has regarding the current temperature of the player as he gets colder the longer he is in exposed territory. His little shivering movement on the status page is just /chef kiss worthy. But my main issue with the UI has to do with the button clicks. As stated regarding object interaction, you can only click in certain portions of the box for an action to be completed,  which can be extremely frustrating. There are these huge confirmation buttons that take up 1/3 width of the screen but only if you are in the right area can you click them. One other thing I would like to see, personally, is a "Take All" option when looting containers, it's nothing huge but I feel it would enhance those who like to "Loot n' Scoot" while they are out and can assess their inventory when in a safer location.

But I digress, as stated I do enjoy the look and feel of this game as a whole and I do hope that this one will turn out just as successful as the other winter survival game I play that I am sure most of the player base has played (The Long Dark). This is just one persons feedback so take from it what you will. And I do hope that this game turns out some fantastic updates for future game play that will blow me away!

Thanks for listening!

Posted by: Thurrax - 16.12.2020, 16:46 - Forum: Game Changelog - No Replies

We are happy to announce that the first patch for Northern Lights is here, and with it comes a lot of system balancing and bugfixes!

Special thanks to everyone who have purchased and played our game! And special thanks to everyone who reported the issues they found and their ideas to us!

We want to remind everyone that Northern Lights is in its first days of Early Access so there might still be a lot of bugs to be ironed and a lot balancing to be done.

Because of this, we encourage everyone to use the Report A Bug button found in the Game Menus in order to reach to us about possible issues! Also don't forget to join our Community and Discord Server where we have chats dedicated for feedback and new ideas!

0.1.1 Changelog

  • Freezing sounds trigger less often now
  • The Inspect Map objective now auto completes if player continues through the cave instead of opening the map. This solves the issue of breaking the questline if the player skips opening the map
  • The Food Stats in consumption panel now display the % of hunger restored
  • It is now possible to craft Sharp Rocks from blueprints rather than the shredding menu to avoid confusion
  • It is now possible to shred Books and Paper Stacks into Tinder
  • Some recipes have been tweaked to more reasonable requirement amounts
  • Activities that do not require tools or timepassing (shredding etc) no longer require the user to look at the timelapse screen
  • It is now possible to sleep on beds in weather station
  • Loading list read from disk times have been greatly improved (from freezing 5-10 seconds to almost instantly). This fix does not affect the issue of the game itself loading too slow, that still being under investigation.
  • Removed MSVO ambient occlusion and added a higher quality SSAO profile in place
  • Disabled exclusive fullscreen mode as it causes Unity Engine to freeze on Alt-Tab (Fullscreen now acts as Borderless Fullscreen until furter investigation)
  • Balancing of frostbite and hypotermia afflictions
  • Balancing of temperatures in interiors
  • Balancing of hunger and hydration depletion values
  • Balancing of melee damage and AI hitbox multipliers
  • Balancing of blisters affliction trigger
  • Balancing of decay values for all equipment tools
  • Balancing of some animals' behaviour
  • Balancing of cabin fever trigger
  • Balancing of timelapse UI duration on tool based activities
  • Fixed an issue causing character to fall through map on load if due to subscenes collision not being fully initialized
  • Fixed an issue causing interaction UI to shiver causing clicking on buttons to not work correctly
  • Fixed an issue causing placeable objects to not work inside buildings
  • Fixed an issue causing frostbite to sometimes trigger before risk reaching 100%
  • Fixed an issue causing character to not recover condition during sleep and passing time
  • Fixed an issue causing Use button to not show on bandage item
  • Fixed an issue causing tool to still be required for tool-less item shredding (clothes etc.)
  • Fixed an issue causing treatments to not work in afflictions (could not consume doses etc.)
  • Fixed an issue causing pelt placing on the ground to break the game
  • Fixed an issue causing rice and pasta to not display as burned in inventory
  • Fixed some missing localization

A note about performance, stuttering, and loading game issues
We are aware that some of you have reported various performance issues, some of them really serious, and we are currently looking into them.

They are the top priority for the next patch and we aim to get them solved as soon as possible!

We already started on improving the memory usage and the loading times but unfortunately these fixes did not make it to the day one patch as we need more time to properly test them.

Thank you again for all your support and understanding!

About Northern Lights

Northern Lights is a survival game set in an open world environment and played from a first-person perspective. The game takes place in the Siberian wilderness where the player assumes the role of a forest ranger, sent on a mission to investigate the disappearance of a crew in charge with a secret facility, whose contact with homeland was lost due to mysterious weather conditions. This is the core experience of Northern Lights. In less than a second, you find yourself helpless in front of the ruthless arctic nature. Stranded far from any human habitation, you have to endure the harsh arctic conditions, hunt for supplies, explore the abandoned world and find a way to escape the island.

The objective is to survive as long as possible by scavenging and using whatever resources they may find within the world. This includes commodities such as food, water, materials, medicine, and tools such as weapons, axes, knives, and a myriad of other items. Wildlife is also present in the form of ferocious predators such as Bears and Wolves that may attack on sight, to non-threatening animals such as the Reindeer, Moose, Foxes, Boars and Hares that may only attack if provoked. Tools and items degrade over time, forcing the player to make careful decisions regarding their condition and their eventual need for repair. Fire, being a primary component, is necessary for warmth and cooking. In his journey, the player will often contract afflictions and diseases, forcing him to think twice before eating a meat raw or consuming an unknown plant.

  WISHLIST THREAD RULES
Posted by: Claudiu - 08.12.2020, 15:14 - Forum: Wishes & Feedback - No Replies

We're receiving emails and messages with amazing feedback and ideas, and we want to keep them coming! In this sub-forum, we encourage people to submit their feature/content ideas for Northern Lights.

You are free to post your ideas as long as you follow a few simple rules:

  • Commenting rude things on other people's ideas is not allowed. Whether you think their idea is good or bad, it is not permitted.
  • Before posting your ideas, it would be best to see first if someone else has already suggested the thing you wish. If you want us to add a Siberian Tiger in the game and someone already posted it, please do not create a new thread using the same idea. Instead, feel free to leave a comment on their post and show your support for that idea.
  • Keep your wishlist posts fairly short and on point. We don't necessarily need too much detail to understand your idea, so if you could be succinct, that would help us a lot.
  • We won't comment on if/when we will implement any of the shared ideas. We will analyze each idea and decide if we are going to implement it in the game or not. We'll post a road-map on our website soon so it is easy for everyone to see what our intentions are. In this sub-forum, we'll limit ourselves to moderating only, either to clean up posts and to remove people if they are being abusive.
